Sibling love...

Today was the day that my sweet girls went back on track after being off for four fabulous weeks! We had a great time surprising my parents in CA for Thanksgiving, baking, shopping, playing, etc. I never enjoy sending them back...
They play so well together and I really miss them when they're gone!
I realized this time... that Justin noticed that they were gone too. I'm sure he's noticed in the past... but he was looking all over the house... babbling. Pretty positive he was calling their names in his own way.

So I have a question for all of you out there. Have you taught your child how to sign names? If so, do you just make up the sign? I would love to teach him how to sign all of our names so that he can ask for us.

For those of you who didn't catch this on facebook... Justin has pretty much mastered home visits from Early Intervention. (walking, stacking, sorting, etc.) He will now have a Speech Therapist do home visits! I am so excited to focus on Speech. He will continue his pre-school class once a week on top of this. (He does say "Mom!", makes an "aaaa" sound for airplane, an "mmmm" sound for car and "ma," which we think is more.) I can't wait to hear more words come out of his mouth!

Isn't sad when there is only one left at home. I am sure he misses them, but probably loves the one on one time too. Glad you guys had a good Thanksgiving. Grandma told me you were surprising your Mom how fun. Hope the girls have fun at school and good job Justin for doing so well.

I've been trying to think of a sign for both Max & Piper, too...

Yes...You are suppose to make up a sign for yourself. Back when I was being "educated in ASL" I chose the letter M and made a long curly sign down my hair. That is my name in ASL.

(back then, I had very long curly hair...so it described how I looked.) Hope that helps!

i let each of the girls decide their "sign" We used the first letter and an action they like to do. For example Catherine liked to sing so we made the sign for "c" and put it by her mouth. Ragan was a "R" and we brushed it against our palm for dancing, I think and Brooke was the "b" sign with her hand going from her head and twisting away for curly hair..I think you get the idea. we used regular mommy and daddy signs and for William we made a "w" and put it over our heart. we havent used those signs in quite a while since he just says their names, but it sure was cute to see when he did it.

I was just wondering the same thing. I've seen people do signs for names, and wondered if they just make them up. I'd ask Michelle Zoromski, I saw Lily doing their names in signs!

You do make them up with the first letter in the first name. On Signing Time they did an "L" with curls for Leah since she has curly hair. They did an "A" going down the side of their face for Alex because his last name is brown and that is how you do the sign for brown. We just tapped our cheek with an "M" for Morgan and Hadley was an "H" with curls for her curly hair. Hope that helps.

We kind of made up name signs to. Macy's brothers are the sign of an A in a circle for Andrew and shaking her hand in an E sign for Evan (now she says their names as she signs them). For Monet, she just signs and says baby. I guess we will all have to use her name someday (we all call her baby, she probably thinks that is her name!) That is awesome that Justin has surpassed early intervention, he is such an amazing little guy! Looking back in hindsight with Macy, I remember being worried and frustrated at that age that she wasn't saying much. As much as I tried to get the words out of her, she just wouldn't say much! I really think the words will just come when they come. Speech when she was 2 1/2 seemed like a lot of receptive language acquisition. She was storing up information to express later I guess! Now at 3 1/2, she says a lot of single words and will try to repeat anything we say (not always very clearly, but baby steps right?) We are working on putting words together. Keep working on the signs though, they have been so helpful to have as her speech progresses. They help a lot with reading and cognitive stuff to!

Pretty much everybody already said this- but they're right! In ASL names are connected to some trait (physical or any characteristic/personality trait) that symbolizes that person. And normally it is done with the first letter of their name. If you want any more info- let me know! I'd be happy to help. aslpro.com is a great website for looking up signs.

We made up signs for Ashlee and Cody about a year ago and it's awesome!!! Cody wants facial hair so Sam scratches his chin for Cody and Ashlee has pretty clothes so he rubs his hand over his forearm for Ashlee. When the kids leave for school Sam will sign their names like where are they?? When Cody is passing the sacrament at School looks for Cody and signs Cody, its so sweet. When they come home after School he stands at the top of the stairs and signs their names. It is hard to think of a sign that hasn't already been taken but think about what makes your child stand apart or something about them that is special or funny and try and just create your own sign. It's so sweet to seem them sign their siblings name.
